Deadly silence spread in the palace. All courtiers were kneeling below the step, but nobody dared to say a single word under the old emperor’s anger. Liu Bei, the king of Han, was in the throne, caught by strong sorrow and madness. He was holding two reports, informing him of the death of his younger brothers, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, who were both murdered by Wu.

“I shall revenge for Yunchang and Yide!”he shouted out. An objector had just now been put into prison. Despite the numerous disapproval kept in their minds, nobody was daring to say a single word now. Liu Bei glanced around the hall and finally focused his eyes on the person alone in the first row. There was his prime minister, Zhuge Liang. He was waiting for Zhuge’s suggestions, but only to receive nothing.

Liu Bei felt worried. He used to trust Zhuge so much that Zhuge’s advice was essential at every decisions. He desired Zhuge’s support, but Zhuge’s reticence was a signal of hesitation. “How do you think of my decision, the Prime Minister?” Liu Bei broke the silence up. It was time to get the answer.

“It is all up to you, your Majesty.” said Zhuge respectfully.

“I want your own opinion!” Zhuge raised his head. “I, from my humble perspective, don’t think the decision appropriate. As is known to all, with the presence of the strong Wei as a threat, we rely on the alliance with Wu to defend ourselves. But now the war is doomed to break it and impair our strength...”

Liu Bei was almost driven crazy. Why, why are you all against me! “Then I’ll try it by myself! Wouldn’t I succeed without you?”Liu Bei shouted, pulling his sword out and chopping the table into two halves.

Zhuge kowtowed again. No utterance was useful, because the emperor was on the peak of his impulsion. Liu Bei went straight out of the hall, leaving Zhuge a stalemate.

Both Liu Bei and Zhuge started to lock themselves in their mansions and refused any visitors, putting the courtiers’ panic aside. The conflict between the two seemed endless, and the governance became almost in a mess—fortunately, a week later, Liu Bei visited the Prime Minister’s again.

“I’ve thought about that.” Liu Bei said firmly. “I was determined to conquer Wu.”

After a while, Zhuge put on a gentle manner.“My Lord, frankly speaking, I do think the revenge unwise now, and I’m supposed to put it forward on the court. but I entirely understand your suffering of loss. Once you decided it, I’ll spare no effort to support you, because it is my duty.”

...“And I also want to have a try.” Liu Bei admitted.

Zhuge kept listening. Liu Bei continued.“I know I have little time left. And rather than stay still in Chengdu just waiting for attacks, I just bet that I might conquer Wu and expand the country, strengthen ourselves to compete with Wei—even after my death, Kongming, your work will be easier.”

“I know.” Zhuge said gently. He knew his emperor, a passionate and persevered man—just what Zhuge admired. He knew Liu Bei wanted to revenge, but it was also a chance to achieve their target of uniting three kingdoms and giving people peace. He was willing to help—no matter whether dangerous or not. They always understood each other, and they dared to take a risk.

The next day, they were found standing shoulder to shoulder.“Conquer Wu!”Liu Bei ordered.

略略吐槽一下老师后来的修改意见

为什么要trust Zhuge's loyalty and wisdom不可啊!就信任葛亮不行吗!夫夫明知山有虎也向虎山行要傻一起傻才是嗑点啊!
